Info Guide to Credit Card Terminals & Check Readers

About POS Check Readers

Checks can account for a large volume of transactions, and provide your customers another option for payment at point of sale. They can also expose you more risk.

Point-of-sale check readers use Electronic Check Conversion (ECC), which is a type of optical character recognition (OCR) technology to scan the MICR information - bank routing number, account number and other information on the check.

Check information is verified against the NCN verification database. An authorization receipt is printed for the customer to sign, which allows the paper check to be converted into an electronic transaction. The check is then returned to the customer marked VOID. Next, transaction data is transferred through the ACH system where funds are debited directly from the customer's checking account.
